Captain Leonard Stuart Winkworth

Leonard is shown as being with the 19th Manchester Battalion in the Lodge Temperance 2557 Roll of Honour at the rear of the minute book. His WW1 medal roll index card shows him as a Lieutenant and then Captain with the Royal Engineers. It also shows that he first served in France, entering on the 23rd June 1918. He appears in the Supplement to the London Gazette of the 7th April 1915 with the temporary position of  2nd Lieutenant.

He was the son of Walter Albert  and Maria Louisa Munroe Winkworth (nee Simon). They were married in 1881 and had at least three children:

  • ·         Walter Winkworth (b 1883)
  • ·         Leonard Stuart Winkworth (b 1889)
  • ·         Elsie Maud Winkworth (b 1893)

Leonard was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne on the 30th  January 1889 and in 1911 was single and working as a draughtsman living with his parents, brother Walter and sister Elsie at 22, Simonside Terrace, Heaton, Newcastle Upon Tyne. It is difficult to determine from the records who Leonard married but they suggest he married Bertha Florence Cain in the London Borough of Ealing in 1919 and they had one son, Walter D. Winkworth born in 1921. Leonard died in 1972 at the age of 83 years in Worthing, Sussex and his wife, Bertha at 95 years of age in 1990.

At the Lodge meeting on Monday 20th January 1913 Bro Fred W. Simon proposed and Bro W. Newton seconded on behalf of Walter Winkworth, Leonard Stuart Winkworth, age 24 years, a draughtsman residing at 22 Simonside Terrace. A successful ballot was held on the 17th February 1913 and he was initiated into the Mysteries and Privileges of Ancient Freemasonry on the 21st April. He was passed to the second or Fellow craft degree on 19th May and raised to the Sublime degree of Master Masson on 21st July. He signed and received his Grand Lodge Certificate in open lodge on Monday the 18th August 1913.

This was very much a family affair as Leonard’s proposer was his uncle, Bro Fred W. Simon (his mum’s younger brother) who would later become master of the Lodge. He was seconded by his brother Walter Winkworth, who later made the ultimate sacrifice fighting for his country and is listed separately on this website.

Leonard was welcomed back to Lodge Temperance 2557 on his return from service overseas by the Worshipful Master Arthur B. Turner  at the meeting  of 17 Monday February 1919 held at the Old Assembly Rooms, Westgate Road. He resigned his membership of the Lodge on the 16th January 1922.

Leonard is commemorated in the Roll of Honour 1914-1918 Rutherford College, Newcastle Upon Tyne (College became Rutherford Comprehensive School  which was demolished and the ROH is now in the Tyne and Wear Archives). He is shown as being with the “Tyne Electrical Engineers”

He is also shown on the North East War Memorial Project website Roll of Honour 1914-18 Lodge Temperance 2557 (NUT254)
