The Lodge Temperance 2557 regular meeting, held on 21st April 2026, was a special night that went extremely well despite challenges with absent brethren. Everyone pulled together to deliver a fantastic ceremony to pass Bro Chris to the 2nd or Fellowcraft degree.
The degree was made unique and memorable by our special visitor Bro Graham, a London freemason whose father-in-law (Bro Jack Cowen) was a member of our Lodge in the 1950s and later. Bro Graham is clearly someone who has charisma which he brought to the lodge delivering a captivating 2nd degree tracing board.
Bro Graham’s father in law, Jack Cowen, was proposed at Lodge Temperance 2557 regular meeting on 21st May 1957. He was aged 28 years residing at 4 Hunters Road, South Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne and in business as a wholesale gown merchant at 107 Northumberland Street, Newcastle. He was proposed by Bro L. Graham and seconded by Bro W. A. Turr.
A successful ballot was held the following month on 18th June 1957 and he was initiated into the mysteries and privileges of freemasonry on 18th February 1958, passed to the 2nd or fellowcraft degree on 20th May 1958 and raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on 21st October 1958.
Bro Graham commented – I’m sure that my late father in law (Bro Jack Cowen) would be pleased that I have now completed that Masonic Circle. I was welcomed and greeted as a member. That welcome and warmth epitomises Lodge Temperance as the perfect example of what it means to be a freemason.
