Masonic Headstones
Researching our founding members and WW1 heroes and writing their biographies has found us walking around many local cemeteries in search of their headstones. You’ll see several photos in our biographies and we’re always on the lookout for more. Take a look at the biographies for Bro Walter Winkworth, Bro Morris Marks and Bro Lewis Forsyth Allan
Wandering through these cemeteries, it’s surprising how many of the older headstones contain Masonic symbols commemorating a life proudly lived as a Freemason and below you’ll see a few we’ve found. As far as we know they are not related to any of our members and we’ve not researched their history but they may be of interest. If you are a descendant or relative we would love to hear from you and include their story here.
If you’ve seen any Masonic headstones while walking through your local cemetery, or have an ancestor or relative who has a Masonic headstone and would like to see it here please send us a photo and let us know where it was taken and we’ll add it.

church for nearly 30 years. His Masonic and other

We were delighted to be contacted by Mrs. Elizabeth Burnage of Bardon Mill, Northumberland, Capt. Henry’s great great granddaughter, who having found this photo of his gravestone on our website enquired if the Lodge he belonged to would have records of his parents to break down a long standing brick wall in her research. Captain Henry’s son Henry Thomas born Holy Island about 1819 was her great grandfather and this was followed by her grandmother Catherine Jane. You can read more here.
